Phoenix Youth Support Service

About us

Phoenix Youth Support Service is a youth service for young people aged 12 to 18 and their families.

Our qualified team of youth workers provide support, advocacy, advice and referral, as well as fun, helpful activities, programs, and opportunities to help empower young people to reach their potential and live fulfilling lives.

If you are or a young person you know is under 12 or over 18, you can still contact us and we'll try help where we can.

What we do

Individual, one to one support

We provide individualised, strengths-based, person-centered case management / mentoring, assisting young people aged 12 to 18 with issues such as accommodation, school and education, employment, relationships, health, self-esteem, legal support, Centrelink, advocacy, and emotional management (including anger management).

Groups and events

We run groups, activities, and events that help young people learn new things, develop helpful life skills, meet new people, express their creativity, and send a positive message to the community about young people.

Our afternoon groups at the Gravity Youth Centre run Thursday during the school term from 3:00pm to 4:30pm.

We also facilitate activities during school holidays (if an event needs a permission slip, you can download our permission ships from our downloads page) and and provide services and offer support to school students at schools.

Our events and groups are announced on:

  • the website events page
  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • our text message and email mailing list. We send out between 1 to 5 updates each term. Call us, or message us on social media or email if you want to subscribe

Subscribing to one of those will get you updates about everything we do, though some projects have separate social media pages for more specific information:

Funding and partnerships

Phoenix Youth Support Service is a project of Wyong Neighbourhood Centre and funded by the Department of Family and Community Services.

We also work and partner with other organisations and businesses to support, advocate for, and provide opportunities for young people on the Central Coast. If you would like to partner with us on a project or even or make a donation or contribution, please let us know.

Jobs

Phoenix Youth Support Service is not currently hiring.

Volunteers and work for the dole

If you are interested in working with us on a voluntary basis, let us know.

To work at with us you will need to have a working with children check (free for volunteers) that clears you for voluntary work and appropriate other experience or qualifications suitable for working with young people.

We are also a WDO (Word Development Order) approved organisation, and if you're eligible, you can volunteer with us or receive support through us to pay off fines. Contact us for more information.

Student placements

We are happy to support students and take on student placements when we have capacity to.

If you are currently studying youth work, community services, social work or social science, or a related discipline and are interested in completing your student placement at Phoenix, get in touch with us and we'll see if we can help.

Referrals

We accept referrals:

  • from young people, parents and carers, and other services
  • over the phone, or in-person during office hours (best time to speak with us in-person is Wednesday, Thursday, Friday between 2:30pm and 4:30pm)

To explain how our referral process works, whenever a young person is referred to us, we add their details to our system. From there we'll give you a call to ask you some questions and then, based on whether our youth workers have capacity to take on new clients, we'll either:

  1. link you up with one of our youth workers
  2. put you on our waiting list to work with a youth worker when we have a space available
  3. if you need support sooner rather than later and our waiting list is too long, or if we're not the best service to support you, we'll refer you on to another organisation and check in with you sometime later to see if you're being supported

We try to respond to new referrals within one to two weeks. We do our best to follow up as quickly as possible.

Once we’ve had a chat with you, our wait list can vary from anywhere to 1 week to 12 weeks, depending on how busy we are. We support lots of young people and only have so much time to do that, which is why sometimes there can be a wait

If we expect our wait list will be more than 8 weeks, we’ll let you know and either ask if you’d like to wait, or do our best to refer you to somewhere you can support you sooner.

If you need anything during that time, if you have any questions, or if you feel we're taking too long to contact you, please get in touch.

You can also reach us at our office number, or social media -- details are on this page.

If you have no credit or data, you can come into our office at Gravity Youth Centre, Lake Haven (between the cinema and library).

We're available from Monday to Friday during the weeks (not on public holidays), though sometimes we do outreach work and aren't always in the office, or may be busy with other clients. The best way to ensure we have time to see you is to schedule an appointment.
