It's National Youth Week! (31 March to 9 April 2017) Calendar of local events

It’s National Youth Week from 31 March to 9 April!

Youth Week is an opportunity for young people to:

  • attend live events
  • have their voices heard on issues of concern to them
  • showcase their talents
  • celebrate their contribution to the community
  • take part in competitions
  • share ideas
  • have fun!

Below is the calendar of youth week events on the Central Coast:

Events we're putting on during youth week:

Open day at Watanobbi Community Centre (near Wyong)

Watanobbi Community Centre (near Wyong) will be having an open day tomorrow, Wednesday 5th April 2017 between 1pm and 5pm. (Google map)

There will be events for both adults and young people.

As part of that, the Phoenix Youth Support team will be there facilitating educational activities for “Hump Day” (a tongue-in-cheek name—we didn’t come up with it!), a day during Youth Week that aims to raise awareness about sexual health, safer sex, and healthy relationships.

Our team of youth workers will be there to answer questions from young people, parents, and carers about sexual health, as well as sharing information about the Condom Credit Card program by Family Planning that allows young people access to free condoms and information about sexual health and contraception from qualified youth workers.

Concerns about young people having access to condoms?

We hear you! However, research indicates that there isn’t a link between giving out condoms and an increase in sexual activity, and it may actually result in increased condom use by young people who are already sexually active. [1] [2] So that’s good to know!

We don’t encourage young people to be sexually active, but if they choose to be (or already are), we want them to be informed so that they can do it in a safer, respectful way that looks after themselves and other people, while being mindful of the consequences.

Young people and can drop by Watanobbi Community Centre anytime between 1pm and 5pm. (Google map

Are you (or do you know) a young person who plays Pokemon Go? Please take our short survey

What's the deal with Pokemon Go?

Pokémon GO is a new, popular augmented reality smartphone game from Niantic.

We think it's cool! Though we have serious concerns about some safety issues that arise from how it's been designed--issues we feel young people and those who care for them should be aware of.

We—the youth workers of Phoenix Youth Support Service, a youth service on the Central Coast at Gravity Youth Centre, Lake Haven—would like to run some events, groups, workshops, or create some resources to help raise awareness of how young people can play Pokemon Go safely.

Two of our youth workers are not only experienced gamers, but also qualified, experienced youth workers who know a lot about internet, mobile phone, and social media ("cyber") safety and have facilitated groups on the subject.

How you can help

If you are the parent/carer of a young person, a young person yourself, or someone who works with them , we want your feedback--please take a moment to leave a comment or fill out our short survey about Pokemon Go:

Take our short Pokemon Go survey

Please share this with anyone you know who plays or cares for young people who use Pokemon Go. Thanks!
